In 2005, while volunteering with Horizons for Homeless Children at a local shelter, I launched my second enrichment program. (I developed the first in college with financial support through an awarded stipend.) I drew on my experience as a classroom teacher and mentor and created Higher Ground for Children.
The challenge for community activists, like myself and my co-director, who strive to deliver comprehensive services to a population in need, is the lack of resources to support start-up non-profits and the push for programs that offer single-pronged, narrowly focused approaches.
These programs are easily fundable and often supported. Comprehensive solutions like ours are seen as too expensive and resource-intensive. Studies have shown, though, that this upfront investment mitigates the downstream financial costs to society.
We believe that unless you support the entire child and his or her family holistically, you will never be successful at helping them achieve their full potential. Higher Ground endeavors to do just that.
